This is so funny, especially because I think all horses have thoughts about us humans that are not quite flattering most of the time. I think most animals would laugh at humans activities if they were not sometimes harmful to them. Humans must seem the weirdest species on earth for other animals. Come to think of it, I believe that Rudolf is also a very good humantrainer too, I would not be surprised if his friends would complement him on how well he has trained me :-)Annemiekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09962378758056371983noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-780372569150560306.post-5818294762761953532011-03-24T00:32:23.844-07:002011-03-24T00:32:23.844-07:00I LOVE this writing. If any credit is due, it goes to Rumi. :-)

Yes, Máire, you are absolutely correct. When I started the blog one idea I had was to write about my journey to try to convey how one thing led to another... and we went from a very conventional boarding situation -- kind of a garage for horses -- with emphasis on riding and competing -- to where we are now. It did not happen all in one "ah ha! moment." There were many of them... Perhaps if you start with the easier (superficial) things -- what's his coat color, does he have markings, what color are his hooves? What did he do? What did you do? Did you rest your head on his shoulder -- how did he smell? Did he breathe on your face? Did you sniff his muzzle? How did that smell... Sometimes focusing on those physical things helps us sneak up on the feeling.

Lynne, I know the feeling you mean, though I am sure you have the experience far more often and intensely than I. Khe-Ra, Kochet, and Desna are still very much in a human world; the horses of Ravenseyrie much less so.

Jen, putting words to the experience we are talking about makes it smaller somehow.... and then it is no longer what we want to convey. It is the very BIGness of the thing that is so impossible to express. Keep trying, though. I will, too. :-)

Yes, Eva, silence is blessed. One of the things about snow is that it stops traffic for a while... and that lets silence reign, even if only for a short time. On one very magical afternoon I had an in-depth conversation with a horse who appointed himself my gaurdian and host. Last night I began to write about it. I found myself up against the same inexpressable wall you speak about yet I kept going. Then I slept and I dreamed about someone holding me for hours on end. The dream expressed what I could not express with words. In March I acquired a very special Curly horse. I brought him out of a province and have taken time to get to know him well. We have the rest of a lifetime to spend "doing" people and horse things together. What I love most is giving him a good scratch. This has created a bond I believe. He will position himself just so to make sure I get just the right spot. He makes incredibly blissful faces that light both of us up. It didn't take long to sense his favorite spots. Let me tell you, when a curly sheds, it goes on for weeks! I come in with fine dander erasing the very fingerprints from my hands and covered in white curls from head to toe. Thanks for enlightening me on just why this was so effective.Sherrihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11023352075571403428noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-780372569150560306.post-1723922127333045372010-11-11T07:10:37.521-08:002010-11-11T07:10:37.521-08:00i sing and whistle to the horses..

And, sometimes, when I just want to broadcast good feelings, I sing "May the longtime sun shine upon you...", which I first heard decades ago on an album by the Incredible String Band called "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter." I've learned since that it is sung in farewell at the end of certain (Yogi Bhajan inspired) Kundalini Yoga classes. The lyrics go like this (I use the String Band's melody):
"May the longtime sun shine upon you....
All love surround you...
And the pure light within you
guide your way on...."

Singing that over and over and over (etc.) again really raises my frequency... It's a perfect antidote to nagging, troubling thoughts.

*******

Eva, Nippy and I sang to our Reddy cat when she was dying. We sang her special song (to which I had made up the lyrics many years ago). It didn't bring her back... but I believe it gave her wings for the journey into what comes after this....Kris McCormackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06036615710219973460noreply@blogger.com
